Gone for a good time, not a long time...

Okay, today is the last full day I'm in Canada. I leave for LA tomorrow and will be in Thailand by next Friday. Don't worry though, you can still follow me. I won't be posting in this blog very much this summer (if at all) but I've set up our Geers In Thailand page so that you can see what Nevin, Luke, and I are getting up to. Please visit often and leave us a few comments if you can.

Peace, have a great summer!

The one week countdown...

Well it's just after midnight so it's now Saturday...my last Saturday in Canada for basically the rest of the summer. I'll get to that later though. Today kicked so much ass it hurts to sit down...

Setting: ----Calgary, Bow Valley Square Tower 4...a smoky voice speaks...

The following took place in the private breakfast club on the 3rd floor of the previously mentioned building. It was dark, quite,...too quite...I had orange juice. It was a secret meeting between myself and two covert agents who were each members of large "evil" corporations. I say "were" because it happened this morning...it's called using the past tense...get used to it.

I sat in my seat, rigid and uncomfortable. I was sweating. Was it the pressure? Had they slipped something into my OJ? No, I was sick, terribly sick with anticipation...or maybe it was the strepped throat. Doctors never can be trusted to tell you the truth. Mine's a real quack.

The woman pulled an envelope from her briefcase below the table. She said "this is for your eyes only." I said "Baby...that's sweet." It contained information about hiring my particular skills for a job. And not just any job. This was a dirty job. They told me some holes had to be dug and that if things didn't go well, I'd also be filling those holes...with cement. I asked "how deep, toots?" but this time the man answered "about 10,000 to 15,000 feet." Damn, they were asking for some pretty big holes...but I guess it's the way of the new world. These young kids never can do it the simple way.

I flipped slowly through the stack of papers in front of me while I considered their offer. It seemed to be good...almost too good. I asked them "so what's the catch?" "Well, the job does come with some...bonuses." "Bonuses hey? Let's see." Another stack of papers lands in front of me. Great, just what I need. They were trying to wear me down but I wasn't going to break. I'm an engineer dammit. I've already made the proper reinforcements to handle this kind of applied stress. Fools.

I told them "it looks good. I'll get back to you soon." With that we all stood, shook hands without breaking our steely stares, and parted ways. I walked steadily away but once I was out of site I collapsed. I could feel that funny feeling in my stomach start to release...and move towards my bottom. Yup, I definitely have the flu. Bastards. This can only mean one thing...I really need to find a bathroom!

Cough, cough...okay, cleared my throat. It's the real me back. I know that last bit was cryptic but basically what I wanted to say was I HAVE A JOB. I finally got my offer from Burlington today and yes, it looks good. I have to take it back up on Tuesday to accept it and I'm pretty sure I will. It'll be so nice to have a job to come home to in the fall. So I'll be in their drilling department. I'm going to work the first winter in the foothills department with Rocky and then probably go on my training once breakup hits next year. After that, who knows. Maybe some training in Houston? An international placement? Lots of options.

Oh, and yes, the week countdown in on. I leave the Calgary airport next Friday at noon for LA. I'll be there for the weekend, meet up with Luke and Nevin, and fly to Malaysia. A couple days in Kuala Lumpur and then we're on to Bangkok to start the Thailand experience.
