The weekend that ruled all others...
Okay, so it's already the next weekend but I still want to tell you about the last one. Yes, it's only Friday but here in Calgary it's already the start of our 10 day weekend...THE CALGARY STAMPEDE.
Nevin's super sweet shades.
Drove down the Corrina Thursday night following Luke, my dad, and the boat. Mostly uneventful drive except for the freshly killed deer that we had to swerve around. We rolled in around 9:00 and everyone else was there by 3:00 am (Jeff likes to pit stop). Then the fun began. The sand came Friday morning so we broke out the rakes and carpet and finished our volleyball court. The cement had to harden so it wouldn't be ready until Saturday. Instead we started on the lake. There was a lot of boarding, even during windy times when we really shouldn't have been on the lake.
Sand on the carpet?? My mom would have killed us.
Yeah...he's faking it.
Jeff was pulling out his usual awesomeness and the rest of us just tried to keep up. I was very close to landing my tantrum but a sprained ankle Sunday night put me out for the rest of the weekend. Brodie was getting some awesome air and Steve, the Kiwi, was just plain givn' er.
One of the best wakeboarding pictures I have of Jeff...too bad I cut off the top of his head. (Click on it to see larger picture)
Tantrum...damn those things are cool.
Nice nose grab!
Corrina is a goddess of tube driving. I like to go slow and make big waves but she showed me the error of my ways. Probably my best tubing experience. Running out of gas in the middle of the lake wasn't so cool but luckily we have some nice Canadian neighbours on the lake to tow us in. Acutally it turned out to be the husband of Donna Carrie that I used to work for at ExxonMobil.
Food was great all weekend too. The girls would make some amazing banana-pancakes in the mornings with eggs, bacon, and sausages. Lunch was usually a huge platter of sandwiches. Supper was either pork loins and potatos or huge sirloin burgers.
Saturday was our huge volleyball tournament. We split into teams of 4 to play a form of King's Court v-ball. The winning team would go to the lake side court and stay there until they were defeated. "The Slackers" team as they were affectionately known (or the "Glieben Destroyers") probably had the most consecutive wins: 3. So it was a pretty closely matched tournament, everyone cycled through fairly often.
See, I try hard. My dad was thrilled about getting this picture.
WE WERE THE GLIEBEN DESTROYERS!
Jeff and I have choice words at the net.
"YOU'RE GOING DOWN, BIATCH!"
I also got introduced to Beers-bee, the beer & frisbee game. It's not too hard to understand but you can sure drink a lot of beer in a hurry.
Monday, with my injured ankle, I still made it out on the wakeboard for a bit. Luke, Nevin, Jared, Brendan and I had been cruising aroung the lake, playing guitar, looking at nice cabins, and trying to decide which boat load of girls to try to impress. Too bad my boarding skills just weren't up to par. We did try some interesting tricks though, like throwing a full can of beer at the wakeboarder. I think I could have grabbed it but it...well...sank. The empty beer can didn't work much better. It kept getting churned under by the wake making it hard to grab. That plus Nevin was driving at 10 mph...very hard to stay on the board that way.
My cousin Carly got up on the board too. Really amazing since she was in 2 foot waves.
Other highlights:
- Dad got his new shed off to a good start. It will hopefully serve as a bunk house too during our reunion at the end of the month.
- Willy passed out on the grave at the fire pit.
- Jeff landed a tantrum, back roll, and 360...back-to-back-to-back.
- Lucas got up on double skis on his first try and was slalom skiing about 30 second later.
- Jeff and I discovered a fun way to drag behind the boat. Seriously, I felt like I was flying...or a dolphin...they're both cool.
- Peter and Ang with their comic routine...lot's of laughs.
- Mark's fireworks show was amazing. We watched from the lake with about 30 other boats.
- Won my first game of Cranium...had the master, Brendan Berg, on my team though.
We are the champions...my frie-ends...duh duh duh DUNH!
So yeah, it was a pretty amazing weekend. The drive home in the truck was nice. The forecast for the weekend wasn't looking too good but we really lucked out. It only rained once and was really nice the rest of the time. I'm considerig putting together another weekend in August. Anyone interested?
One third of our group...26 total! The hot tub was pretty grimey by the end.
